Materials & Sustainability
At Hobo Studio, responsible manufacturing is not an afterthought — it is foundational.
All timber used in our collections is sourced in compliance with Indonesia’s SVLK (Sistem Verifikasi Legalitas Kayu) certification system. This government-regulated framework ensures legal harvesting, traceability, and responsible forest management from seedling through to export. Every piece we produce is supported by verified supply chains and approved sources.
Our collections are shaped primarily from mahogany, teak, mindi and mango — selected for their strength, stability and enduring performance. These are complemented by woven rattan, iron accents, upholstery and carefully considered brass hardware. Each material is chosen for integrity and longevity rather than short-term trend.
Mahogany holds a particularly important place in furniture history. Originally native to the Americas, it became one of the most respected cabinet-making timbers in Europe and North America during the 18th century, valued for its strength, workability and rich depth of tone. Master craftsmen selected it not only for its beauty, but for its reliability and ability to hold refined detail.
Today, genuine mahogany is cultivated in responsibly managed plantations across tropical regions, including Indonesia. Modern forestry regulations ensure sustainable harvesting practices, ecological stability and full traceability throughout the timber’s life cycle. What was once a rare colonial import is now grown under disciplined oversight, supporting both environmental stewardship and skilled local industries.
Sustainable wood is not defined by origin alone, but by management. When harvested from well-governed plantations, timber remains a renewable resource. As trees grow, they store carbon within their fibres — a quality retained throughout the lifespan of the finished furniture. Responsible sourcing, combined with thoughtful production, ensures that natural materials remain part of a balanced ecological system.
Durability remains central to our philosophy. Well-made furniture should endure — reducing replacement cycles and lowering long-term environmental impact. Longevity is not simply a design decision; it is a responsible one.
Finishing processes are carefully controlled to protect the integrity of each piece while maintaining its natural character. We prioritise methods that balance performance with environmental consideration, ensuring both visual refinement and structural resilience.
Sustainability at Hobo Studio is quiet and practical. It is embedded in sourcing, reinforced in process, and expressed in the lifespan of the product — not presented as a statement, but demonstrated through consistency.
Grounded in responsibility. Shaped by design. Made to last.
